Tips on How to Find a University Course
Going to a university is not cheap, and it is also four years out of your life, so it’s well worth spending time examining all the possibilities to make sure you choose a course of study you will enjoy, and which will give you a reasonable chance of employment at the end.
Take Your Time Choosing the Right Courses at the University
Choosing an enjoyable course of study is essential. Imagine spending four of what should be the best years of your life studying something you hate. You will not get the best out of your university years, and may not achieve good results at the end. Either choose a subject which really interests you, or a vocational course that could set you on the right path for a fulfilling career. Keep your choices focused, as applying for a wide range of subjects shows that you do not really know what you want to study, and this is far more likely to lead to you changing courses, or dropping out altogether.
When you are reading the course descriptions, be sure to understand exactly what they mean. An example would be in medical courses, where certain words such as problem-based learning, case-led, and traditional can have quite different applications. You will be studying this subject for four years, and misreading the course descriptions could lead to you studying something quite different from what you were expecting.
Contact Universities to Find Out More
Once you have identified a few universities which offer appealing courses, research the universities in more depth, and if you are unsure about anything, contact them to find out more. You will find they will be more than willing to offer further information, and many also keep a record of personal contact and may use it when making their decisions.
Making contact with a university shows commitment on your part, and that you have really thought about your choices. Visiting the universities also helps, not only by proving you are serious about your application, but can also help you decide if a particular campus is right for you. Try to spend at least a few hours on campus to get a better feel of the place.
In fact visiting your favorite universities is essential, as the glossy brochures produced by universities are very much just advertisements. Check out the academic credentials of the university, and if you can try to talk to students when you visit, ask their honest opinions of the place, and what they love about it, and what they loathe. Ask if they would choose the same institution again. If you intend to stay on campus, ask to see the rooms and facilities.
Finding Different Modes of Study at Universities
These days there isn’t always the need to attend university full time, or even to study on campus. There are a lot of distance learning courses and part time courses available, which many people find more convenient. Choosing to study part time, or through distance learning can be a lot more flexible, as it allows you to work at the same time to help fund your studies. Many distance learning courses are very well respected, and for many people it it’s a great way of getting an affordable university education.
Will Your Degree Include Work Placement?
Some degrees involve a period of work placement, or an internship. This can take place here or abroad depending on the course. These types of courses can be very beneficial, as they offer you the chance to gain valuable practical experience. You may even find that your internship leads to a job offer after you have completed your studies. It is far safer for a company to offer a job to someone whose ability is already proven to them, and who already knows how the company works. Even if it doesn’t it will still be interesting for other companies to read about it on your resume when you apply for jobs.
How Many Universities Should I Apply To?
Although there is no limit to the number of universities you can apply for, it is best to keep a little bit focused. Most people apply to between five and eight universities, as it can be difficult to submit quality applications to any more, and providing you have done your research well, this should be plenty. Lastly, allow yourself plenty of time to fill out your applications. Don’t leave it until the last minute as your university years should be some of the most enjoyable years of your life.
