Time Management Tips for Students

As a college student, it is very important to become organized so you can manage assignments, classes, and even part time work with ease. The transition from high school to college can be daunting for some students since they get a lot more freedom – the time spent in classes is less but the time assignments take up can be a lot. To avoid last minute stress and deadline dilemmas, it is best to stay on top of things so you can enjoy college the way it is meant to be enjoyed.

A to-do list is a great thing to help you keep track of classes, projects, assignments, papers, and more. Another valuable tool is the art of prioritizing and learning effective study techniques.

Here are a few time management tips that can help you keep up with everything and still leave you with enough time to join school clubs or have some fun.

A To-Do List Will Help Manage Time

A to-do list can be your savior, both at school and in your professional career. You can create one online or use a traditional pen and paper. A great option is to get a sticky notepad and take it along at classes. You can simply lift off your task list and pin it to your study table when you reach your residence. This way, you will know what needs to be done and be able to prioritize tasks accordingly.

Remember not to club too many things for one single day. Always create a list that enables you to complete your tasks even in case of emergencies like sickness or poor health.

Set Aside Some Planning Time

During the start of the semester, read through your syllabi and make a list of when all your assignments are due, take a note of deadlines, examination dates, etc. You can use a single sheet large calendar for this purpose, which can be pinned to your organization board for easy access.

For weekly tasks, set aside 20-30 minutes at the beginning of each week and write it down in your calendar.

Using Free Time Effectively

Do you often have a time gap between two classes? You can use this time to review class notes to help retain information, review future assignments, or start homework. And if you have an hour or so between classes, use it up to visit the library and collecting research material for your assignments.

Minimize Distractions to Make the Most of Your Time

College life will be full of distractions in the form of friends wanting to party or just wanting to hang out with you and it is definitely difficult to say no. College is about studying, but the fun should never go away. However, this is where prioritization comes in. If you have planned to complete an important task, say no to your friends – they will still be there after your important task is finished. Consider it as a reward for sticking to your planned schedule.

Procrastination and Time Management

Procrastination can be a big deterrent in getting work done – you are too tired, you want to watch TV, or you just cannot concentrate. Too tired? A short nap or a hot shower will help you feel rejuvenated in no time. Writers block? Take a walk and the fresh air will get you back in work mode.

Divide long, arduous tasks into sub tasks and set milestones which help you complete the task without feeling stressed. One of the best ways to tackle procrastination is to think of the end result – what could be better than an A on your paper?

Learn Effective Study Techniques

What time of the day are you most productive? Whether it is the morning or night, start using this time to study or simply use up the time when your surroundings are quietest.

By reviewing and revising class notes, you will save up on learning time during examinations. Be prepared to ask questions during lectures and participate in classroom discussions.
